Here a new bottom block has been replaced. The old cracked one broke most likely because the spike plug was not fitted properly.
If a spike plug is not fitted all the way in as far a the coller, it will over time work its way in to the coller and often cracks the block.
This will effect the tone of the cello as well as causing distortion to the ribs, back and belly. A cracked block will also effect the angle of
the spike.
